Bolognese Puppies

The Bolognese are a rare breed but puppies are occasionally available from reputable breeders to responsible homes. You may experience a short delay in finding a puppy, but they are always worth the wait! We hope the following advice will be useful when choosing a Bolognese puppy.

The Secretary of the British Bolognese Club will hold a list of reputable breeders, contact:

Ms Kathy Begg

Tel. 01270 582233 / 07951 822040

If you are in any doubt or if you require further information, a call to the Secretary above or Chairman Mrs Stannard will ensure that the breeder is knowledgeable and has a responsible attitude to breeding.

Before entering into any agreement perhaps check the following points:

·         Are they a member of the British Bolognese Club?

·         How long have they been breeding?

·         Can they provide a reference from a vet or a member of the Bolognese Club?

·         Ask them what they breed for? Temperament-what is the temperament? Size- what does the standard say? Conformation –how is the dog meant to look? Then ask them a few questions about Bolognese. Have a copy of the breed standard handy (downloadable from this site). If you are not sure what to ask call the Secretary or Chairman for advice.

·         Do they show Bolognese? When did they last show? When did they last win?

·         Have they got a Kennel affix? How long have they held it?

·         How much are they charging? The average price for a puppy is around £1000 and normally includes:

o   Kennel Club Registration. However this is no guarantee of a well bred dog. Anybody with the correct paperwork can register a litter. The Kennel Club do not have the facilities to check every litter registered and anybody who pays the fee can sell a registered litter of puppies on the Kennel Club site.

o   Had at least 1 inoculation and vet checked.

o   Microchipped and or DNA profiled.

o   Have an Insurance policy in place

o   Be provided with an information sheet on the care of the puppy, feeding instructions and a supply of food for the first few days if required.

o   Facility to take puppy back if conditions change.

Remember if there is a problem with a breeder and they are not members of the Bolognese Club, there is nothing we can do. If they are members there is at least some chance of mediation.

Many excellent breeders are not Accredited Breeders so again do not be led to believe this makes them a better breeder. Just call the Club to get an up to date list of breeders within the British Bolognese Club. Anybody who is a member of the Club has a vested interest in the breed, not in the breeds’ exploitation.

Please be aware - unfortunately as well as a few unscrupulous breeders out there, we have been made aware of people trying to deceive you. Be aware of people advertising Bolognese very cheaply on the internet. Please ask them all the above questions. They will not be able to answer you. If you ask to visit the puppy, they will say they live in a remote part of Britain and to save you the trip, can deliver the puppy to you. They will ask for something like £150 to be paid into their bank account, in order to deliver the puppy. There is no puppy. They will take your money, have your address details and will try to bribe/threaten you. This does happen, and not just with our breed. Please contact the Club if you are in any doubt.
